The Design Engineer contributes significantly to the early stages of product development by converting market insights into technically and commercially viable design concepts. As part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, this role is responsible for developing proof-of-concept system designs that align with strategic business objectives.
With a strong background in mechanical systems and a sharp analytical mindset, the Design Engineer ensures that new concepts are practical, cost-effective, manufacturable, and maintainable.
This position offers the opportunity to work on innovative technologies that shape the future of high-tech machinery. Each project presents unique technical and creative challenges, ranging from ideation and prototyping to problem-solving and testing. The role involves close collaboration with engineering, support, and product management teams to drive innovation and continuous improvement throughout the development process.
*Key Responsibilities**
Participates in the justification phase to align technical direction with market needs and business goals;
Converts business requirements into functional proof-of-concept prototypes, even in the absence of existing design documentation;
Communicates design intent and technical insights to CAD engineers for further development;
Leads the design and development of complex machinery and system concepts;
Identifies and resolves technical challenges through structured problem-solving and evaluation;
Acts as a technical liaison for internal teams, customers, and external partners;
Establishes the foundation for modular product structures during early development phases;
Conducts prototype testing both in-house and on-site to validate design performance;
Organizes and facilitates creative ideation and brainstorming sessions;
Provides expert input during the definition phase to ensure robust and scalable design solutions.
Job Requirements
Holds a qualification in Mechanical Engineering, with at least a secondary vocational education level 4;
Experienced in operating a variety of machinery, including milling machines, lathes, welding equipment, and similar tools;
Capable of performing machine overhauls, conducting maintenance, and carrying out technical inspections;
Skilled in assembling and commissioning prototypes, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues on-site;
Brings 6 to 9 years of relevant experience in mechanical design or related engineering functions;
Demonstrates strong conceptual thinking, with a focus on practical feasibility and delivering real-world value;
Balances innovation with operational constraints such as cost, serviceability, and hygiene standards;
Communicates effectively in English; additional proficiency in German and/or Spanish is considered an asset;
Willing to travel internationally for 30% to 60% of the time;
Displays a proactive, inquisitive, and solution-focused mindset, combined with a collaborative and hands-on approach.
