We are seeking a Life & Physical Science Instrument Engineer to work on our Customers Site (ESA-ESTEC) in the Netherlands, supporting the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality. This is a fantastic opportunity to get into one of the most sought-after space agencies in the world. 

Main Responsibilities

As Life & Physical Science Instrument Engineer you will concentrate your activities on the following:

  • Provide engineering support to ESA projects in the area of human physiology and biology
  • Contribute to technical specifications for planned research and development activities
  • Support the evaluation of project designs and development results
  • Plan, set up and run test activities in the microgravity laboratory
  • Design and implement laboratory test set-ups, including breadboard testing and sample evaluation for Life Support activities
  • Analyse, interpret and report data from biological and physiological experiments
  • Supervise gravity research activities in the TEC-MMG LIS laboratories
  • Prepare and carry out experiments using the Large Diameter Centrifuge (LDC), Random Positioning Machines and related equipment
  • Operate and maintain the Large Diameter Centrifuge at ESTEC, including services for commercial customers
  • Liaise with the science community to organise gravity-related experiments
  • Provide input to technology and science strategies related to diagnostics for life and physical science experiments supporting exploration.

    Do you think you are the person we are looking for? See below what experience or knowledge you should bring:

  • Master’s degree in Life Sciences or Engineering Sciences
  • Background and experience in gravity-related research
  • At least 4 years of relevant work experience
  • Knowledge and experience with optical diagnostic methods (e.g. optical microscopy)
  • Strong expertise in (micro)gravity research for life and physical sciences
  • Laboratory experience in the biomedical field
  • Experience in space technology projects
  • Candidates must be EU nationals.
