Job Description

As a Strategy & M&A Manager at AkzoNobel, you will play a central role in both shaping long-term strategic direction and executing high-value M&A transactions. You'll work closely with senior leaders across the organization, drive complex cross-functional initiatives, and influence decisions at the highest levels. This is a highly visible role that combines analytical rigor, commercial acumen, and project leadership, contributing directly to the company's future growth and transformation.

You will be flexibly deployed across strategy and M&A initiatives based on team priorities. One month you might be challenging a BU's five-year plan, the next you're leading a €400M acquisition. This role is ideal for someone with the ambition, structure, and strategic mindset to thrive in a dynamic global environment.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include

  • Leading AkzoNobel's annual corporate strategy cycle, coordinating across BUs and preparing deliverables for ExCo
  • Acting as a strategic sparring partner to business unit leaders, supporting them on key priorities, market opportunities, and transformation initiatives
  • Developing executive-level presentations and decision documents, ensuring clear and compelling communication of strategic insights
  • Managing end-to-end M&A processes, from target screening and valuation to integration planning
  • Leading cross-functional teams through due diligence, business case development, synergy modeling, and stakeholder alignment
  • Working closely with the M&A Finance Controller to assess valuation and financial impact of potential transactions
  • Coordinating with Legal, Finance, Tax, HR, and other key functions to ensure smooth execution and governance of deals
  • Managing external advisors, including investment banks, law firms, and consultants, to ensure high-quality input and efficient timelines
  • Participating in clean teams, interpreting confidential information and translating findings into actionable business insights
  • Navigating legal, financial, and compliance challenges with professional discretion and high integrity
  • Supporting post-deal integration planning, ensuring that strategic objectives are realized after deal closure
  • Coaching and mentoring junior team members to develop future leaders and maintain high performance within the team
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of AkzoNobel's Strategy & M&A methodologies and processes

The Successful Applicant

  • A Master's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, or related field
  • 5-8 years' experience in strategy consulting and/or end-to-end M&A project execution (EUR 50-400m deals)
  • A proven track record of delivering strategic or M&A projects, including bolt-on acquisitions and joint ventures
  • Strong conceptual and structured thinking skills
  • Excellent stakeholder and communication skills, with executive-level exposure
  • High integrity and experience handling sensitive/confidential data
  • Familiarity with legal/M&A documentation and participation in clean teams
  • Experience coaching junior colleagues
  • Fluent English (written and spoken)
